Your career as a DJ

Presentation/background:

My name is Julien, I was born in 1988 and I grew up and lived until I was 25 in a small town in France. I now live in London since 2014.

When I was 17/18 years old, I wanted to discover the mix to become myself a DJ in a club, it was like a dream.

Going out to party was nice, but I always preferred to be the one behind the turntables sending music and seeing people having fun and having a good night!

The problem was that I didn’t know anything about this business and I didn’t have anyone around me who could teach me the basics.

So I had to figure it all out myself, starting from scratch. I downloaded an application to start understanding what the mix was all about, try out some transitions, and discover the first features.

I was so excited and passionate about it that I spent hours on it in my spare time. At that time, I was still in high school.

The beginnings were not very glorious but I started to quickly understand how to link 2 songs, make coherent transitions, master the tempos of the different styles of songs, etc.

Besides that, I continued my studies because I didn’t want to give up everything for music, I needed a back-up.

So I enrolled at the university and I followed the courses (from afar I admit it) while continuing to work on my turntables all the rest of my free time.

I gradually started to get heard via the internet on music platforms, and I started to play at parties in the town I was in, and then little by little in party halls, until I had enough listeners to do my first tour! It was a small tour with few dates, but it was already extraordinary for me and my level. What developed me was mainly my performances in festivals during the summer season.

What probleme did I encounter?

The more time passed, the more the problem arose: do I have the time and the motivation to continue my studies? If I had listened to myself, I would probably have given up everything to devote myself entirely to music. My relatives advised me to continue, even if it means finding a job related to music, but to ensure me a financial stability, which I must admit, one cannot promise in this field, especially at my level.

So I had to decrease my rhythm of music creation and performances, to refocus on my studies, do my internships and validate my diploma.

For 7 years now I’m an assistant in a bank, which I don’t dislike, and which allows me to have a stable income every month, and to be able to maintain my equipment, and to continue to create and publish my content on music platforms. On the other hand, I don’t work on it as much as I used to and I don’t really have opportunities to play on stage anymore.

What solution did i found?

You will have understood where I’m coming from, I reached a stage where I felt frustrated because I couldn’t devote myself enough to my passion, I was practicing this activity more than occasionally and I had less and less inspiration, and therefore less and less motivation, in short, it was a vicious circle.

It was then that, while searching on the internet, I came across the program that Mrs. Gambino proposes; it was exactly what I needed! It would allow me to continue my work without losing my income, and above all to practice my passion more, and above all to make it profitable.

A dynamic program, targeted and adapted to each profile, with a really useful and long-lasting reorganization.
